Fall is one of the best times to get children out of the house and explore New Jersey. From pumpkin picking and corn mazes to animals, Halloween celebrations, and simple trips to the library, there are plenty of fall activities for kids in New Jersey that nannies and families can enjoy throughout October.

Whether you're looking for a weekday nanny outing or a weekend activity for the whole family, here are a few ideas to add to your fall calendar.

Pick Pumpkins and Spend a Day on the Farm

Happy Day Farm in Manalapan is a great option for a classic fall outing.

Its 2026 Fall Festival runs from September 19 through November 8. During October, weekday visits on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday include pumpkin picking, corn mazes, tractor rides, flowers, and Pumpkinville. Weekend festival days include additional children's activities such as an animal zoo, pig races, slides, pedal carts, and more. Children under 2 do not require admission.

Good for: Nanny outings during the week or a bigger family day on the weekend.

Make a Day of Apple and Pumpkin Picking

Alstede Farms in Chester offers a combination of pick-your-own produce and family farm activities.

Fall visits can include apple and pumpkin picking, farm animals, children's activities, food, and other seasonal attractions. Because schedules for picking and activities can vary, check the farm's calendar before heading out.

Good for: Families or nannies who want an outing with several activities in one location.

Try a Fall Festival With Plenty for Kids

Snyder's Farm in Somerset is another option worth considering, particularly for children who like more than pumpkin picking.

Its October fall programming includes activities such as hayrides, a corn maze, children's play activities and games, with pumpkin and sunflower picking available as additional activities.

Good for: An active fall day with children who need room to explore and play.

Have a Family Movie Night on a Farm

For something different, Doyle's Farm in Neshanic Station is holding family-friendly movie nights on Fridays and Saturdays through October 30, 2026.

Families can choose a farm tour before the movie or attend the movie only. This month's scheduled films include A Bug's Life, Charlotte's Web, Inside Out, Turbo, and Monsters, Inc. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

Good for: A Friday or Saturday family outing rather than a typical weekday nanny activity.

Celebrate Halloween Without the Big Scares

Families with younger children don't necessarily need a haunted house to enjoy Halloween.

Kids Boo Fest at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson offers daytime, not-so-scary Halloween activities on select Saturdays and Sundays throughout October, including October 10–11, 17–18, 24–25 and 31, plus November 1. Activities include trick-or-treating, costumes, entertainment, games and rides.

Good for: Families who want a larger Halloween outing without making scary nighttime attractions the focus.

Look for Free Community Halloween Events

Not every October outing needs an admission ticket.

For example, SpookFest Market in Piscataway is scheduled for October 31 from 4–9 p.m. Admission and parking are free, with trick-or-treating, a costume contest, bounce houses, a children's train, music, games, food vendors, and other activities. Some individual activities and food may have additional charges.

Don't Forget Your Local Library

One of the easiest activities for a nanny to add to the weekly schedule may already be right in the child's community.

Check your local library's children's calendar throughout October. Libraries may offer storytimes, seasonal crafts, music and movement, Halloween celebrations, scavenger hunts, after-school activities, and other children's programs.

Libraries can be particularly useful for nannies looking for an inexpensive indoor outing on a chilly or rainy day. They also give children an opportunity to socialize, explore books, and become familiar with their community.

Some programs require advance registration, have age restrictions, or require a library card, so check with your local branch before attending.

Make Fall Outings Part of the Routine

A great nanny does more than keep children occupied. Outings can create opportunities for children to explore nature, practice social skills, experience their community, and simply have fun outside their normal routine.

New Jersey has plenty to offer this October, whether that means picking a pumpkin, visiting farm animals, getting lost in a corn maze, attending storytime at the library, or dressing up for a not-so-scary Halloween celebration.

Before you go: Fall schedules can change because of weather, crop availability, capacity, or other circumstances. Always check the venue's official website for current hours, admission, age requirements, reservations, and cancellation policies before leaving home.
